Where to start: Layering Skincare 101
Upgrading or even starting your skincare routine can seem daunting, from all the different types of products, ingredient names, brands, bottles, tubes and sprays – it can be challenging to know where to start. Radiant skin is combination of genetics, healthy habits and a thoughtful skincare regime. When trying to get the most from your skincare routine, you might ask, what’s the correct order for using skincare products?
General Rule: thinnest products first
Cleanser: prepares skin for the rest of the routine, removes dirt, oil and makeup from the surface of the skin.
Toner: is a liquid moisturizer that enhances the skins surface, making it looks fresher, smoother and hydrated. For oil skin, the right toner can also reduce enlarged pores and excess oil and for dryer skin it can lessen redness or flaking.
Exfoliant: prevents buildup of dead cells and boosts the absorption of other serums and moisturizing products. Not abrasive or harsh, they unclog pores and clear breakouts[1].
Serum: good serums contain exceptional ingredients like antioxidants but are special because of the concentration of the ingredients they contain and their distinctive textures. The best serums have a high concentration and blends of these research proven ingredients. Their textures are typically a delicate lotion, gel-lotion, or a silky fluid-texture, should apply easily and feel lightweight.
Moisturizer/Sunscreen: moisturizer helps the skin retain moisture so it’s healthy and balanced. Choose a moisturizer that has hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and emollients like ceramides to help absorb and retain moisture. For daytime, you can use a hydrating SPF and for evening pair retinol with a thicker moisturizer to reduce irritation.
A final few tips:
- Consistency is key – in two ways:
- Apply each product according to their consistency, going from thinnest to thickest to ensure best absorption
- Use products regularly, some may need to be used daily for up to 8 weeks to see the effects, so research the main active ingredient or read the label for recommend use.
- Try to let each product settle/absorb or dry into the skin before applying the next product for maximum benefit
- Morning skincare routines should focus on protecting and preventing sun and environmental damage during the day. At night you should apply products that will repair and nourish your skin while sleeping.
- As always, for daytime always complete your routine with an SPF of 30+.
