For nearly every skin type, leave-on chemical exfoliants are a great product to introduce in your skincare routine. For the uninitiated, BHA of beta hydroxy acid, also known as salicylic acid can yield stunning results. Don’t let the word “acid” scare you – BHA is non-abrasive and some formulas like the Paula’s’ Choice 2% BHA liquid exfoliant can be calming and soothing. Particularly for oily skin prone to blemishes and clogged pores, and for other skin types, it can also be help reduce the appearance of fines lines, wrinkles, dull and uneven skin tone, while also smoothing rough, bumpy skin texture[1].

BHA works by exfoliating inside the pore, which is something abrasive scrubs can’t do. The word exfoliation often brings to mind abrasive face or body scrubs which are actually too harsh and harmful to the skin[2]. Those scrubs often have rough edged- ingredients that create micro-tears in the skin’s surface and can cause visible damage over time. Chemical exfoliants can penetrate deeper into the skins  while being gentle on the skin.

Still need convincing? 2% BHA is effective for regular, daily use but it’s possible to experiment with higher or lower strengths to find what works best for you. Leave-on exfoliants gently and quickly remove built-up layers of dead surface skin to reveal the softer, younger-looking skin underneath.
